Shivangani returns home

On Friday August 14th Shivangani Chand said goodbye to her school mates at Rabulu Indian School in rural Tavua, but not as any 10-year old child might on a typical Friday afternoon. The following day she traveled to Nadi with her mother, where she joined two other children, Josefo Qionibaravi of Nausori and Timoci Tagiciverata of Kadavu on a life-changing journey. read more Changing Lives

Changing Lives

The open heart surgery patients in recovery at Lautoka Hospital were all smiles when Miss Sugar City contestants came for a visit on Thursday morning, September 16th. Despite having undergone major surgery only days before, the patients were in fine form, some already walking around, laughing, chatting, and eating. One patient who had received a heart bypass, Ms. Maya Telamarawa of Rabi Island, was so inspired by the visit that the doctors and nurses her nominated her “Miss Hospital” and presented her with her own crown and ribbon. read more RHD device

Taking Preventative Measures

FIJI Water Foundation has teamed up with Cure Kids Fiji and the Geneva Solidarity Fund to support the work of Fiji’s national Rheumatic Heart Disease Control and Prevention Program. Our initial contribution has gone towards the purchase of two sturdy, portable echocardiography machines which will be used throughout Fiji by specially trained nurses during school health checks. These machines are easily transportable and if necessary can be powered by a car battery- just what is needed to reach out to Fiji’s rural areas. Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is the most common heart disease in children and young adults globally; recent data from Tonga and Fiji suggest that the prevalence of RHD in school-aged children is the highest recorded prevalence in the world and translates to 40,000 children affected in the Pacific. read more From one heart to another
